CATL hat angekündigt, Investitionen von rund 20 Milliarden Yuan (ca. 2,5 Mrd. Euro) in seine Batterieprojekte zu tätigen und somit seine Kapazitäten weiter auszubauen. Einerseits sollen mit den Investitionen die bestehenden Werke in Fujian, Jiangsu und Sichuan erweitert werden. Andererseits sollen weitere 10 Milliarden Yuan in eine Produktionsstätte am Hauptstandort in Ningde fließen. Berichten zufolge soll die neue Fabrik im Jahre 2021 den Betrieb aufnehmen und bei Volllast eine Kapazität von 45 Gigawattstunden produzieren. Das Magazin teslamag.de berichtet von insgesamt 52 Gigawattstunden an Kapazität, die in China entstehen sollen.
In Deutschland investiert CATL momentan knapp zwei Milliarden Euro in den Bau einer Zellfabrik in der Nähe von Erfurt mit einer Gesamtkapazität von 14 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr. Im Jahre 2019 lieferte CATL laut einem Bericht rund 32,5 Gigawattstunden an Lithium-Ionen-Zellen für die automobilen Anwendungen aus. Dies entspricht einem Anteil von rund 28% der weltweiten Menge.

Zuletzt war bekannt geworden, dass neben LG Chem auch CATL Tesla mit kobaltfreien Batteriezellen beliefern wird. Darüber hinaus wurden Abkommen den deutschen Automobilherstellern Volkswagen und BMW abgeschlossen. Die besondere Bedeutung der Zellen für den Automobilsektor wurde unlängst durch eine Statistik des Portals elektroauto-news.net deutlich: Insgesamt 38.164 Elektrofahrzeuge wurden im Januar 2020 in Europa zugelassen. Die Elektro-Strategie des Volkswagenkonzern wird darüber hinaus ohne die wichtigen Zellen nicht funktionieren können.
