Global Power Synergy PLC (GPSC) plant in Thailand eine Batterie-Produktionsanlage unter Verwendung der neuartigen Semi-Solid-Lithium-Ionen-Technologie und greift dabei auf die Entwicklungen des US-amerikanischen Unternehmens 24M zurück.

GPSC und 24M, dass als Ausgründung des Batterieherstellers A123 Systems entstand, sind bereits langjährige Partner. Schon im Mai 2019 lieferte 24M vierzig gitterförmige Li-Ionen-Zellen mit 110 Amperestunden (Ah) an die GPSC. In Zusammenarbeit mit PTT, einem staatlichen thailändischen Energieunternehmen, baute GPSC diese damals als großformatigen Zellen zu 48V-Modulen. In einem stationärem Speicher-Projekt sollte damit frühzeitig die Funktionsfähigkeit der Technologie validiert werden.

Nun plant GPSC darauf aufbauend den Bau einer ersten Serienproduktion des neuartigen Zelltyps. Schon im Dezember 2020 soll dafür die neue Anlage in Thailand, die mit einer Anfangsinvestition von 35 Millionen US-Dollar entsteht, fertiggestellt und betriebsbereit sein.

Zu Beginn wird eine, im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, mit 30 MWh noch relativ geringe Produktionskapazität der neuen Zellen angestrebt. Bereits 2021 soll die Produktion jedoch schon auf 100 MWh erhöht werden.

Neben Global Power Synergy kündigte auch Kyocera Pläne an in die Technologie von 24M zu investieren zu wollen.

Die Semi-Solid Batterietechnologie zeigt insgesamt einen interessanten Verfahrensansatz für eine Weiterentwicklung der Batteriespeichertechnik. Semi-Solid-Batterien bieten die Energiedichte und Ladezyklenbeständigkeit von klassischen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, benötigen jedoch weniger Trägermaterial, was die Zellen leichter und günstiger macht.
