Das Fraunhofer-Institut IWM für Werkzeugmechanik in Freiburg beschäftigt sich mit neuartigen Batterien auf Basis von Feststoff-Elektrolyten aus Keramik. Diese versprechen im Allgemeinen höhere Leistungs- und Energiekennzahlen, welche auf Basis einer hohen ionischen Leitfähigkeit der sogenannten NZP-Keramiken erreicht werden. NZP steht hierbei für die chemischen Elemente Natrium, Zirkonium und Phosphor, die als Grundmaterialien der Keramiken dienen.

Eine Herausforderung hierbei ist, dass die Leitfähigkeit von Keramik-Materialien gemeinhin geringer ausfällt, als die von Flüssig-Elektrolyten. Nun habe man aber mit Hilfe automatisch ablaufender Simulationen mehrere Kombinationen der NZP-Elemente entdeckt, welche eine besondere hohe Leitfähigkeit erreichen. Dies wird durch sogenannte Wanderpfade, innerhalb der Gitterstruktur des Elektrolyten erreicht. Diese „Ionen-Autobahnen“ sorgen für einen besonders schnellen Ladungsaustausch innerhalb der Batterie.

Vielversprechend erscheint in diesem Zusammenhang die Forschungsarbeit insbesondere durch die automatisierte Materialabstimmung. Die computerbasierte Simulation hat hierbei den entscheidenden Vorteil, dass Prognosen zu den Eigenschaften der Werkstoffe getroffen werden können, ohne diese chemisch erzeugen zu müssen. Somit könne ein großer Teil der benötigten Ressourcen eingespart werden. Als Eingangsparameter für die Simulation und Materialauswahl dienten dabei nicht nur die elektrochemischen Potentiale der einzelnen Elemente, sondern auch weitere Faktoren, wie die Zugänglichkeit innerhalb der Erdkruste und Umweltverträglichkeit der Stoffe.

Die Simulationsergebnisse, welche am Großrechner des Steinbuch-Supercomputer-Centers am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie erzielt wurden, versprechen nun Feststoffbatterien mit verbesserter Ionenleitfähigkeit praktisch zu realisieren. Hierzu muss allerdings im nächsten Schritt praktisch validiert werden, was auf Basis der berechneten Ergebnisse zu erwarten ist. Die Forschungsresultate zeigen die Bedeutung von rechnergestützten Simulationen, welche Vorhersagen zu neuen Materialkombinationen liefern und damit die Entwicklungszeit künftiger Batterietypen, zumindest im Labor. maßgeblich verkürzen können.
